"Bag It" Documentary

Long time readers know I hate plastic even more than I hate CNBC. Check this great documentary about plastic shopping bags. Now if only they'd ban styrofoam...

Buy Nothing Day

Yes, for most it's Black Friday, but for others it's buy nothing day.

I missed it, true, but you can make any day a "buy nothing" day. Go check it out.

Bottled Water or Tap? Volvic.

Readers of my blog know that I'm not a fan of bottled water.

Every time I go out surfing, I pick up 2 or 3 plastic Poland Spring bottles that have washed up with high tide and lay stranded amidst clumps of seaweed. Plastic doesn't go away... ever.

However, while I'm extremely influential, I understand a few of you may still be drinking bottled water. Fine... however, if you're gonna do it, perhaps buy some Volvic, at least until the end of August.

Why? Because for every liter you buy, they'll provide 10 liters of clean water to children in Ethiopia.

And I'm more "pro-children" than I am "anti-plastic."

How To Make Gasoline Cheaper...

Bush was on the television the other day discussing his desire to make the tax cuts permanent. That would be wonderful... I can't stand taxes.

But how do you make up for those lost revenues? Here's an idea, and it would also make gasoline cheaper... Cut the income tax, like Bush wants (and I want) and supplement the lost money with a higher gasoline tax. Simple.

Encourage people to work harder by allowing them to keep more of their income while discouraging them from purchasing gas guzzling vehicles that are not only bad for the environment, but for our overall foreign policy as well.

We don't need to drill in Alaska, like they were discussing on CNBC today. That's just another short-term solution. (I agree with most of what Vince Farrell was saying, BTW.)

We need bigger, longer term initiatives that will end our dependence on oil and gasoline, not increase it. The oil guy was saying we'd get 10 billion barrels (potentially...) from ANWAR... that amounts to an extra 1 million barrels of oil a day. We're currently using 20 million barrels a day, so that'd give us a potential 5% increase in supply.

So what kind of savings can you really expect at the pump? To be generous, 5%? Or, 20 cents on $4 a gallon of gasoline?

Is that really the best we can do? Is it worth continuing to ruin the environment? Absolutely not. We need to show leadership and develop new technologies. Imagine America exercising some positive leadership in the world again? That would be nice, and it would also provide jobs.

A decade ago, we produced 40% of the solar panels made in the world... now we produce 8%. Look, you don't have to be a genius, or even a liberal democrat, to see that oil and gasoline production is not the future... so why are we heading backwards?

Ali Velshi... Really, Really, Annoying

I know... it's odd that I'm not complaining about a CNBC anchor. But Dinosaur Trader blog is always looking for new opportunities to mock "news personalities" and Ali Velshi, the CNN "money honey," needs to catch some heat.

I mean, if I turn on CNN and I see that dude's shiny head and stylish eyewear, I immediately have to change the channel. Dennis Kneale is an idiot, no one would argue otherwise, but at least he knows he's an idiot.

This Velshi guy thinks he's the bee's knees...

DT Wins Again!

So happy this fad is done... okay, now what the hell do they do with all that plastic waste?

It took a year of hating, but victory is mine. I hope TG abandoned her long position!

Michelle Caruso Cabrera

I wish I had a before and after picture (surely, in time, some gossip site will furnish us with one)... but, what the fuck did she do to her face?

Plastic surgery is scary.

China Freezes Energy Prices; Bans Plastic Bags

People don't like inflation? Oh, okay, we'll just freeze the price of gasoline.

Someone has to pay that bill eventually, no?

By banning plastic bags, China will save an entire week's worth of oil consumption, or 37 million barrels in one year.

Interesting...

Fuck The Robots

Now that Christmas is behind us, you may find yourself wasting countless hours speaking with customer service robots.

Thankfully for you (loyal reader) I hate robots and so I've found a couple of sites that help you get through the annoying phone trees that now plague our nation's customer service departments.

First of all, there's Bringo. They navigate the phone tree for you.

Then, there's Gethuman. This is just a website with directions on what numbers you enter onto the phone to get around the robots. They have a database with directions for over 500 customer service lines all neatly categorized.

Happy calling.

Stock Earnings For Thursday November 1st

First day of November trading. Let's start off the right way!

I'll be watching the following...

BGC, JLL, LVS, MTW, SUN, SWN, AGU, DNR, XOM, OSK

Meanwhile, the futures are getting beaten. Perhaps now that the FED decision is behind us the market is free to act in a rational matter again. I mean, people are going to have to deal with the $100 oil thing soon...

Oh, and CROX is getting smacked. That makes me feel warm inside. Sorry, Goddess.

Perhaps that will give them less money to fund their world domination. Also, I think CROX are made of plastic... surely, they are not biodegradable. In fact, they are definitely made of plastic and they are definitely not biodegradable. Worse yet, they are going to make ugly plastic clothing to match their ugly plastic, non-biodegradable shoes. Thanks, CROX.

Can you imagine when the fad ends, the way they'll be piling up in landfills?

And think.... they'll still be there when our grandchildren are having kids. Sigh...

Bob Dylan Selling Cadillacs?

What?

The man who wrote "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)?"

Indeed, not much is really sacred.

Paper Or Plastic? Canvas.

In the beginning the dude talks about Barack Obama. He makes a great point. However, what I find interesting about this video is the whole portion on plastic and the floating waste dump in the pacific that is TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS!

Disgusting. Everyday I go down to the beach and pick up ballons, the tops of 2-liter soda bottles, coffee cup lids... all plastic. As he mentions in the video, nothing can be done about the stuff that's already in the ocean. The only thing that we can do is USE LESS PLASTIC. Please heed his advice. There really is no political argument here... you may label him a liberal or whatever but that's not the point of me posting this.

The environment isn't a political issue, it's a human issue. So keep an open mind.
