It's certainly true that the first thing electronic media ask themselves everyday is "what are the newspapers publishing today". Apart from the NYT, Washington Post, LA Times most US newspapers are pretty parochial and don't have the resources for international news. So these easy to cover stories are going to feature prominently.
Recently, I've been visiting the website of the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv (in Hebrew). I remembered that there wasn't much international news in Israel, but it's shocking that their webpage has no section for international news and no time I've looked has any headline dealt with anything outside the Middle East. By this standard, American media is very cosmopolitan :)
